Donations, Donations!
"It seems we tend to give glamour to athletes and celebrities when our men and women in the armed forces are out putting their lives on the line..." says Sherry Thalman, co-director of MCC Middle School's Veteran's Day Program. "We need to teach our youth what it means to be patriotic, and Mr.Quinlan, (also a co-director) does a great job of that, and keeping us all "in check"."
In the past year, the veterans program has recieved nearly $2,000 in donations from local veterans who attend the program. Along with that, donations of food for the luncheon that follows the program have been donated by the veteran's, being that the past year is when the school started serving the veteran's lunch. In honor of Dale Rinkevicz, a fellow veteran who passed away this past January, over $3,000 has been donated in his name. Great Lakes Energy's People's Fund has also helped the cause by donating a check for $1,200. "Our community has been so generous to our veterans", states Thalman.
The program would like to use the money donated by GLE People's Fund and some donated in honor of Dale Rinkevicz to purchase some technology tools to record local veteran's stories. In addition to that, the money, and veteran books, from the Dale Rinkevicz Fund will be used to create a Veteran's Library, at MCC Middle School. The library will be available to all veteran's, and they will be able to come in and enjoy a great book, a cup of coffee and relax. The library will be run by students at MCC Middle School.
"I would like for the kids to be more involved." says Quinlan. At the next Veteran's Day Program, Quinlan and Thalman would like for the students to be participate more in the program by helping record the veteran's stories with the technology equipment. "Our goal is to leave a legacy, and to make sure this program is still here long after we are gone, and teach our students the Core Values of what makes America great.." concludes Quinlan.
Us here at MCC Middle School and those apart of the Veteran's Day Program would like to send out a warm "Thank-you!" to all those who donated to help make our program that much better for next year, we appreciate it very much.
